Open Source Software Use in End-User Organizations Increases

IDC, a global provider of market intelligence and events for the information technology community, recently performed a survey of open source software use in end-user organizations. According to their research, open source software and related services are expected to continue to expand and grow. In 2007, almost 60% of the companies surveyed declared their company’s spending on open source material increased. End-user organizations also predicted their spending on quality assurance, testing, and certification of open source software would grow about 150% between 2007 and 2008.

A potential factor in this surge of spending on open source material is the economic recession of the United States. In an effort to reduce costs, open source software can help companies stay afloat in a period of receding profits. With the growing demand for cheaper information technology solutions, IDC predicts that alliances between proprietary and open source software companies will increase. Survey findings indicate that organizations believe the integration of open source and proprietary material will form the biggest challenge facing both vendors and users in the coming years. Consumers believe open source software to be linked to more innovative services, creating an even bigger challenge for commercial software producers.

Other survey findings include organizations’ reasoning for switching to open source software. Cost savings were found to be the number one reason for switching from proprietary to open source. In addition, medium and large organizations have the greatest increases in spending for service related to open source software.
